Behind The Scenes with Jim Carrey

HK Magazine: Ever stolen anything yourself?
Jim Carrey:
Sure. We used to jump the farmer’s fence and steal ears of corn. My big brother was three years older than me and doing crazy things - he used to hang out with this bad guy who eventually married my sister. At the time, he was a delinquent and they used to break into the school and steal lunch money and vandalize and go crazy. Sometimes they’d break into people’s houses when they weren’t there. They wouldn’t take anything. They’d just party in the house and eat their cheese puffs and play music. I went along for the ride.

HK: This is a remake. If one your films were remade, which would
it be?
JC:
I think they already have - “Dumb and Dumberer.” I’ve had that experience. It’s not pleasant. It was a bit like having my grave robbed while still alive. It was like being Elvis, seeing people do you in Vegas. It was very weird.

HK: Tell us about those reported “lifestyle changes.”
JC:
Life is an experiment and I experiment with meditation, exercise, activities that I get interested in. I’ve always done that to a certain extent but I’m honing in the direction of clarity. I’m sitting on the couch at night and I get an uncomfortable feeling about just “letting it happen.” We’re programmed to stop that feeling and I’m about experiencing it and having clarity. I think all of us desire to be a great soul at some point.

HK: What's your movie “23” about?
JC:
It’s a suspense movie, a thriller. I’ve had this obsession with the number 23 for years, with license plates, dates, birthdays and things like that. A couple of years ago, I was telling somebody about this and at that moment they handed me a book with the 23rd Psalm. I changed the name of my company to “JC 23” because the 23rd Psalm for me is living without fear and knowing that you’re going to be taken care of. I was explaining these things to somebody and I was handed a script called “23” and I thought it was so compelling and so different that I had to do it. That’s how I run my career. They’re the things that come to me and I’m just going to follow it.
