First Person: Sean Kunjambu
When stylist to the stars Sean Kunjambu (better known as Sean K.) isn’t readying celebrities for the red carpet, he’s adding his signature flair to an edgy editorial shoot. As testament to his high demand, the artist hasn’t needed a namecard or an agent for the past eight years. Johannes Pong squeezes some of Sean’s past out of his future-oriented self.
Too much thought goes into a name card. What color? What paper? What font? Fuck that shit. People have Blackberries and iPhones now anyway. Name cards are irrelevant.
As someone once told me, If you’re good at what you do, they will find you.
I used the name Sean K. before, because I didn’t want my dad to track me when I left home at 17. I’ve started to use my full name now since he passed away.
I moved from Mauritius to Singapore when I was five. I was constantly flying at a young age, and when I was six, I wrote that I wanted to become an air stewardess. My teacher crossed out the “–ess” in red pen.
I have a creole background, and I’ve lived everywhere long enough—here, London, Paris, LA, NYC—I really don’t have a label for myself.
I wanted to study fashion, but my dad pushed me to do architecture. I quit after six months—it was all mathematics, and honey, I’ll only count if there was a dollar sign, or if it was in inches.
