Anyone who tries to say that Hongkongers don’t like sweet foods is either blind or a filthy, sugar-hatin’ liar. Our saccharine city is stuffed to the gills with candy stores, patisseries, bakeries and dessert soup joints. Patisserie Tony Wong

This elegant pastry shop on Fuk Lo Tsuan Road was founded by former Royal Garden pastry chef Tony Wong. All the cakes here are made in-house by a team of more than 10 pastry chefs. The quaint, alpine cottage leads you to expect French-style puff pastries and irresistible butter creams. Tony knows his audience, and he fuses French mousses and macarons with Asian flavors, such as green tea custard. One of the best sellers is the eye-catching “Chocolate Truffle,” a glossy dome made with 75 percent dark chocolate mousse. If you’re not a chocolate lover, the raspberry Napoleon is another fan favorite: fresh raspberries and cream sandwiched between cookie and crispy puff pastry to make an extremely pretty cake indeed.

Kung Wo Dou Bun Chong

This century-old Hong Kong institution is famed for its soybean dishes, for which it proudly uses old-school, manually operated devices rather than modern machinery. Its daofu fa, or sweet tofu, is lovingly dished out of a huge porcelain pot that’s been in use for over 40 years. It comes with a sprinkling of brown sugar and is doused in ginger syrup.
