Nightlife on TV. And radio. And YouTube.
Announcing on Facebook that I would be meeting Andrew Zimmern, haters started writing on my wall: “Ugh, he’s so annoying.”
Missed the Armani party last Saturday because I had a 10am-10pm shoot with the delicious Andrew Zimmern of Bizarre Foods notoriety, then a RTHK radio interview with the effervescent Brian Leung on his new show, “We Are Family,” at half-past-midnight. Aah, such is the life of a Personality. My schedule had been incredibly busy right after coming back from Bangkok—rushing off to see the “Bruce Lee My Brother” gala premiere (Aarif—hot and blossoming into a fine actor; Hanjin—cute!) and calling every three hours for my luggage situation. Somehow my check-in baggage got tagged to go to Yangon, Myanmar. Upon realizing the fuckup back at Chek Lap Kok, I did not fret and freak. I just went up to the counter and declared fiercely that the Junta was NOT going to keep my fashion and the three new chic winter caps I bought at Silom.
After a day of not-really-waiting, I got a call informing me that my bag was finally on a plane back to Hong Kong. They couldn’t send my luggage back to me with a bow on top, even though they screwed up in the first place—since it went to the Golden Triangle, it must go through Hong Kong immigration again, in case anyone slipped in a couple of bags of extra party treats. My father graciously opted to go to the airport to pick it up for me, as I was to start filming with Andrew Zimmern on that very day. A day later Aung San Suu Kyi was released. I feel rather jubilant about the two related incidents.
Announcing on Facebook that I would be meeting Andrew Zimmern, haters started writing on my wall: “Ugh, he’s so annoying.” And through the delightfully nattering grapevine, I heard that quite a number of local food editors and foodies seem to have a quite a bit of casually preconceived judgments about Zimmern—that he doesn’t know shit about Asian food, and that he’s condescending towards Asian foods (which begged me to think—just how many episodes of Bizarre Foods have these people watched, and how many Asians are condescending about their own culinary heritage to begin with?)
Oh well, all the better for world domination for the scrumptious Amy Ma and I. Yes, scrummy. At Yung Kee over goose, Andrew reenacted the whole scene of Amy walking up to the film crew—high-heels clicking and flicking her hair in an oh-so relaxed yet sexy manner, effectively spellbinding the cameramen with her Oriental glamour, and stopping filming for a split-second that probably seemed like an eternity to a drooling male crew.
After spending almost three whole days with Andrew Zimmern, I found him to be the ultimate raconteur—side-splittingly eloquent and a gregarious coach, full of energy, wit and sweetness. And if I’m going to become a storyteller at that level, I still have a truckload of WERQ IT to do.
Speaking of werq it, more shameless self-promo: Everyone who’s anyone has been forwarding a YouTube teaser all over Facebook as a viral-tastic invite for the launch party of the Volume album at Volume on Nov 20. Yep, DJ Stonedog has been working his ass off on the album, recording with HK and Singapore artists, including new local girl group “Hollywood Road” (loves it) and… little old MOI. My track is called “Rising 2 Fame” (Stonedog came up with the title and all the lyrics, including my rap part) so keyword search for it, bitches, if you wanna hear Johannes sing. Or come see me perform it live on Nov 26 at Hyde, where I’m the MC for Mr Gay HK 2010. TTFFN!
