Dear Mr. Know-It-All,
I’m looking for an Indian threading lady on Kowloon side, near TST preferably. I’ve tried to look online, but a lot of the numbers are out of date. I’ve seen threading done in salons around Central, but I’m looking for something more authentic where the price is right. —Perfect Arches

If you ask me, threading—along with waxing, sugaring and all other forms of hair removal—should be considered extreme forms of torture. But I’m reliably informed that “a girl’s gotta do, what a girl’s gotta do” [insert finger-snapping here] and so I’ll tell you to go where the locals go for an authentic, if painful, experience. Lucky for you, Tsim Sha Tsui is a hub for all of your hair removal needs, especially along Nathan Road. There are many small beauty parlours of varying standards of hygiene tucked away in the many shopping malls. Shabnum (Golden Crown Mansion, 9/F Unit A, 70 Nathan Rd., Tsim Sha Tsui, 2369-3378) has won a cult following for their hair removal maven. Eyebrow threading is $50, and I hear that she is as ruthlessly fast as she is precise.

Dear Mr. Know-It-All,
I need to learn Putonghua to be more competitive at work and I’m wondering which is the better option: Private tutors or group classes? Any recommendations? —Mandarin Mary

Whether you go private or group-bound depends primarily on the two fundamental factors that Hongkongers can never get enough of: time and money. Obviously, private one-on-one classes are better because the lessons are focused on you. Most private tutors charge roughly $200-300 for a one-hour lesson. Check out our classifieds section for a private tutor that works for you. For those who want to feel like they're really back in school, the Chinese University offers a spectrum of classroom sessions that are certified and accredited. You will have to share the teacher with about 20 other students, but it’s a comparative bargain at $5,400 for 40 sessions of 50 minutes. Just one drawback: progress is only as fast as the slowest student. Classes are available in their Tsim Sha Tsui and Sha Tin classrooms. Visit www.cuhk.edu.hk/clc/new/en for more.
