Let the Right One In (Sweden)

	This brilliant prison film is like a French “Godfather,” bloody in parts but above all cerebral. Don’t go to French prison, but if you do, watch this film first.


The Secret in Their Eyes (Argentina)
	Mysteries of violence and romance explored in a superbly crafted piece of cinema, with broody and muy caliente Latinos with bewitching eyes—what more could you ask for?


Inception (UK/USA)
	Not quite the mind-trip everyone seemed to insist it was, but pretty good nonetheless. Your questions answered: Q: Is the protagonist dreaming? A: Does it matter?


Love in a Puff (Hong Kong)
	This hilarious romantic skit set in Hong Kong has some French quirkiness, some Woody Allen wit, and exploits that vastly underrated fact—cigarette breaks rock.


How to Train Your Dragon (USA)
	We didn’t really expect it, but this is a warm, funny and charming film which
	actually manages to make 3D work for it. We’re looking at you, “Alice in Wonderland."


The Social Network (USA)
	Wait, so Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg gets his own, Aaron-Sorkin-scripted film? That’s so not fair. Tom from MySpace must be livid.


Bright Star (UK)
	A beautifully-shot rumination on the life on Romantic poet John Keats. Phenomenal cast and script and mellow fruitfulness everywhere.


Kick-Ass (USA)
	Thanks to the limb-chopping, C-bomb-dropping, incredibly awesome Hit-Girl, “Kick-Ass” lives up to its name in every single way.

	My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
	Kanye redefines music once again in his fifth album. Poppy, hip-hoppy, and brilliant. Not everyone likes him, but hey—at least making music keeps him off twitter.


Girl Talk
	All Day
	Fantastic, amazing, mind-blowing mash-up from the king of his genre. Did you know that his home town of Pittsburg has named a day after him?


Cee Lo Green
	The Lady Killer
	Buy this album for the phenomenally good “Fuck You,” the naughtiest—and possibly catchiest—gospel-funk tune ever written.


Arcade Fire­
	The Suburbs 
	The rock collective goes deeper and darker with their third album, reaching a new level of maturity (if that’s even possible). Straightforward melodies and heavy-headed lyrics are surprisingly reminiscent of Springsteen.


The Black Keys
	Brothers 
	Playing with garage grooves and creative arrangements, the alternative blues-rock duo loosen it up, making their most interesting-sounding, jive-worthy album so far. Dan Auerbach’s vocals still kill.


Elton John and Leon Russell
	The Union 
	These two piano men may belong to a different generation, but their collaboration is a rare gem. The old-school country, gospel and rock vibes have so much nostalgia and quality, that the younger kids just can’t compete.


Gil Scott-Heron
	I’m New Here
	Scott-Heron’s first album in 16 years, and he’s lost none of his touch. The only problem with this album is that it’s way, way too short.


Janelle Monáe
	The Archandroid
	Awesome glitchy jazzy nu-soul electro-pop tunes, from a woman with more style at the ends of her awesome hair than Gaga could summon in a lifetime.


Ray LaMontagne and the Pariah Dogs
	God Willin’ & the Creek Don’t Rise
	The forever-talented and forever-shy folk singer-songwriter seems to have finally accepted that people actually like him. His new album doesn’t necessarily top the last one, but just focus on the raspy, somber voice that makes everything sound sexily soulful.


Daft Punk
	TRON: Legacy OST 
	You may or may not like the movie, but your life simply won’t be complete until you listen to its masterpiece soundtrack, produced by the biggest electronic heroes of our time—who both happen to be TRON nerds, natch.

	Phenomenal interactive space opera. Killer story, gorgeous graphics, and the chance to be a dick to the entire universe.
