Chillin in Manila
Manila is a rising star in Asia's spa scene. Victor Chau gets a feel for the city’s best places to unwind and indulge.

A trip to Manila for a spa treatment? Your first reaction might be: “Why shouldn’t I go to Bangkok or Bali?” Manila, at first glance, is hardly a spa haven. But things are changing, and Manila has recently begun to establish itself as a major spa center in Asia. There are many reasons why this city has a place in the region’s thriving spa market. First, Manila is an easy city to get around, as English is widely spoken, unlike in Bangkok and Bali. Secondly, the price is competitive: a two-hour Javanese Lulur treatment (ladies’ dream spa treatment) costs about US$63, 30 percent cheaper than in Bali. The Philippines also has its own school of massage called “hilot,” which translates as "midwife" or "chiropractic practitioner" in Tagalog, and promises a “motherly caring touch” from the masseuse. Most importantly, Manila is the gateway to the country’s hugely popular destinations such as Puerto Galera, Cebu, Boracay and Palawan, and hence makes the perfect indulgent interlude for tourists either kicking off or wrapping up their holidays.
