First Person: Heiward Mak Hei-yan
An up-and-coming star of Hong Kong cinema, 26-year-old director Heiward Mak Hei-yan recently won the award for Best Screenplay for her light-hearted romance “Love in a Puff” at the 30th Hong Kong Film Awards. Her sharp eye for the subtleties of life makes her a favorite among the likes of veteran film actor Eric Tsang. She sits down with Emily Wu to talk about her life in film.

I have loved making fun of others ever since I was in kindergarten.
I remember once, when I was queuing up in the playground for morning mass,
I intentionally stamped on the foot of the child standing right behind.
You know why? Because when everyone had to stand under the scorching sun, I got punished and had to stand outside the staff room, where I could enjoy the cool air coming out from the air-conditioned room.
I was very adventurous and slightly rebellious. I often hung around the street at nights. I smoked.
My mother was not very protective but she spent all her time on me until I was three years old. I am an only child.
She is a wedding photographer, and she taught me how to take pictures.
