TRX Training, Retro Hairstyles (VIDEO), Melvita and Rollerblades

No one yet has been able to tell me whether the “rip” in Rip Training stands for “get ripped” or “R.I.P.” I’m suspecting it’s the latter as this hardcore training program, which has just launched at Seasons Fitness, looks pretty damn tough to me.

Get Ripped

No one yet has been able to tell me whether the “rip” in Rip Training stands for “get ripped” or “R.I.P.” I’m suspecting it’s the latter as this hardcore training program, which has just launched at Seasons Fitness, looks pretty damn tough to me. Using a TRX band, Rip Training incorporates moves to strengthen muscles, improve core stability, boost metabolism and target stabilizer muscles with rapid direction changes as well as a focus on rotations using a resistance band to target multiple muscle groups simultaneously. Right now, Seasons Fitness is offering free Rip Training trials to all Skin Deep readers: All you have to do is give them a call and pre-register for a session. I ain’t going—it sounds like far too much hard work—but you gym bunnies should definitely give it a whirl.

DIY Retro Hair

So I went to a swanky “Shanghai Nights”-themed ball last weekend, and seeing as I’m a little low in the flapper dress department, I had to do something else to fit in with the theme and retain my title of queen of half-assed fancy dress. Cue the ever-useful YouTube hair tutorial. I went with vintage hair and makeup specialist ILoveGerardo (www.youtube.com/user/ilovegerardo), who teaches you how to create your own vintage updos—from 1950s pinups hair to rockabilly quiffs. For this occasion, I picked 1930s pinwheel curls (video below), and thanks to video help from the online hair celeb, it took me just 15 minutes to curl and spray my hair into a crown of vintage awesomeness. I chucked on a black dress and a string of pearls, and was good to go.

Melting for Melvita

I usually find organic brands a tad self-righteous and not particularly effective, but following a recent tour of Melvita’s IFC branch, I must say I’m coming round to the idea of all-natural skincare. Melvita is France’s biggest organic wellness brand and was developed almost 30 years ago by biologist and beekeeper Bernard Chevilliat. Their product line is pretty vast, and includes everything from skin and body care to shampoos, deodorant and even organic toothpaste. My personal faves are the pure cold-pressed oils, such as evening primrose, avocado and argan, to be applied neat to the face and body or else mixed in with your usual moisturizer. I’m also digging the rose “extraordinary water” (pictured), which is somewhere between a toner and a serum and perfect for soothing skin after washing your face. But my favorite part? They’re really into preserving biodiversity and restoring the bee population—numbers have dropped significantly over the past few years, a worrying trend because the stingy little bastards are extremely important for pollinating plants. The brand even has its own apiary in Kwun Tong.

Get Inline

Strap on your rollerblades and hit the streets—no, it’s not 1998: the Hong Kong Inline Hockey Cup returns once again this year from November 17 to 27. Held at the YMCA Kings Park Centenary Center, there will be athletes from more than 10 countries taking part in the tournament. Also, if you’re keen on trying the sport for yourself, you can lace up on Saturday, November 19 and have a go, with free trials offered to the public from 3pm onwards. And if you find yourself hooked after your taster, you can always join the Hong Kong China Inline Hockey Association, which has more than 400 members and organizes league matches among its various clubs.
Check out www.hkciha.com.hk for more information on the association and the tournament.
