Peninsula Hotel Bans Shark Fin Soup

Peninsula Hotels have issued a ban on their menus to no longer supply shark fin soup. The ban will also take effect for all the hotels linked with the hotel's parent company, The Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels, Ltd.

Shark fin soup is seen as a luxury dish and is a traditional addition to the Chinese wedding banquet menu, dating back to several centuries ago.

With the high consumption of shark fins, marine conservationists should be thrilled to hear that Asia’s oldest hotel company has taken the step to discontinue providing shark fin soup. Hopefully this decision will encourage other hospitality companies to do the same and help to preserve the bio-diversity of our oceans for future generations.

The ban will take effect after 1st January 2012.
