Tough Love

We might all be hardworking at the office, but Hongkongers don’t seem to be as adept when it comes to intangibles like relationships with fellow human beings—with many of us resolving to develop stronger bonds with our loved ones and foster closer ties with good friends in the new year.

For someone experiencing particular difficulties in a relationship, psychotherapist and life coach Daniel White (www.integratedway.com) suggests trying to find the root cause of the friction—by taking a closer look at oneself.

“Rather than trying to change others, we can consider working with our own difficult feelings in a skillful way,” White says. “We have a lot more power than we realize to change our lives, but it must begin with recognizing how we view ourselves and our experience.”

If things aren’t smooth with Mom, for example, it might be wise to ask ourselves whether it is really Mom that we have a problem with, or actually the feelings that are triggered when we interact with Mom.

“When we recognize what’s being triggered inside us, as opposed to just blaming the other person, we have the power to work with and transform these difficult feelings,” White says.

There’s no magic bullet here, obviously, but with the right mindset and careful self-examination, loving and caring relationships might be just a heartbeat away.
