Jupiter
The Parisian electro pop duo, Jupiter, from the famed electronic label Kitsuné met on a dance floor in a club in London and have gone from strength to strength with their most famous singles "Saké" and "Kass Lemon." Find out about their latest single, favorite experiences, their love for music and the electro pop scene today. Hong Kong Magazine: How did you meet?
Jupiter: We met in London -where we were studying at the time- during a party. Everyone but us had left the dance floor despite the awesome song which was playing (Junior’s "Mama Used To Say”). That’s how we realized we had a lot in common music wise.
HK: Have you both always been interested in music?
J: From as long as we can remember, yes. We used to listen to many different styles growing up, thanks to our respective siblings, so it was only natural that sooner or later we'd pick an instrument.
HK: How long do you plan on being involved in the music industry?
J: As long as we can! To be honest, we can't imagine [a] future outside the music industry.
HK: Can you tell us about your latest single/album?
J: We're just releasing our debut album, "Juicy Lucy." It's eleven tracks with various influences, and it's awesome.
HK: You have done a few remixes for other bands, which was your favorite one to do?
J: Tough question, we're always biased towards the latest [track] we produce so we'll have to go with "Midnight Magic - Calling Out (Jupiter Remix)."
HK: How do you choose songs to remix?
J: We get requests [from] the bands or their management and if we feel we can do something interesting, we just go for it.
HK: Where has been your favorite place to play so far?
J: Colombia was quite an experience. People over there were so excited to see us play; it was overwhelming.
HK: Where would be your dream place to play?
J: On Jupiter.
HK: What is your favorite thing about performing a set?
J: When we DJ, pulling off a seemingly tricky mix between two completely unrelated songs is a blast. When we play live, seeing the audience get down to our music always does it for us.
HK: Do you still listen to other types of music or do you stick to electro?
J: We tend to listen more to non-electronic music actually. A lot of disco and funk obviously, but also Hip Hop, Rock n Roll- pretty much anything really.
HK: How do you think electro pop has changed in recent years as its now become more popular?
J: I guess pop music in general took many cues from electronic music, so what was initially known as electro pop doesn't necessarily make sense anymore. In fact we preferred pop music from a few years back, when it was more heavily influenced by Hip Hop bands such as Outkast or N.E.R.D. than David Guetta.
HK: What do you hope your music brings to your fans?
J: The urge to dance.
HK: What can Hong Kong fans expect from your upcoming show?
J: As we'll be DJing they can't expect to hear us sing. But we'll bring over the best France has to offer.
HK: Have you ever had a strange/funny fan experience?
J: One Japanese fan had crafted a "Jupiter" ink stamp out of a block of marble, which was a refreshing surprise!
