Inside Hong Kong's Newest Shopping Mall
Hysan Place in Causeway Bay is chockablack with cool shops, yummy restaurants and even a 24-hour bookstore. Hana R. Alberts checks out the highlights.

Just a month old, Hysan Place is a great one-stop shopping destination, with over 120 stores and tons of dining options. On the lowest floor is a huge gourmet supermarket called Jasons, which is perfect if you’re looking for lunch on the go or a place to stock up on picnic supplies to take to Victoria Park. On top of that are nine floors lined with fashion and beauty outlets, and, above that, four floors’ worth of restaurants.
Many brands are making their Hong Kong debuts at this mall, including six achingly trendy Japanese brands as well as international names, such as Nanette Lepore and a Billabong concept store. Hysan Place is also home to Hong Kong’s second Gap, rain-boot retailer Aigle, and a big branch of Joyce Beauty, which is a major Hong Kong-based outlet for beauty products.
Lest Hysan Place be lumped together with the city’s other megamalls, it also includes a sixth-floor “Garden of Eden,” housing lingerie, beauty products and women’s fashion labels. The seventh floor is devoted to shoes, while the 11th is an upscale food court of sorts with self-service restaurants offering a variety of international cuisines. There’s also a Sky Garden on the fourth floor—for a quick outdoor escape from what’s sure to become an air-conditioned madhouse of retail-hungry masses.
Another highlight: Eslite, the Taiwanese chain bookstore famous for its much-beloved 24-hour branches. Hysan Place is home to the company’s first overseas store. This book lovers’ paradise stocks 230,000 titles over three floors—the largest selection in the city. Following the tradition of the original store, it will stay open all night long from Thursdays to Saturdays until September 16. It also has mini-shops that offer design-y goods, eco-friendly products and handicrafts.
Hungry from all that shopping? Grab a caramel croissant from Le Salon, Japanese bites at Izumi Curry, Singaporean cuisine from Shiok!, Shanghai-inspired fare at The Dining Room or Cantonese dim sum and Hong Kong desserts from The Sweet Dynasty.
