Social media week (SMW) is the world’s largest conference focusing on emerging trends in (surprise!) social media. The event takes place simultaneously in 13 cities throughout the world.

Basically the event is like one huge festival with performances by Blogger, YouTube, Instagram, LinkedIn, MySpace, foursquare and headlining acts by Facebook and Twitter. Only instead of music, you get social media stuff.

What is Social Media?

We all know Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn, but when it gets down to it, social media is a pretty hard concept to define.

Josh Dirks from Search Engine Journal explains in this article how social media has taken us back to a pre-Industrial Revolution age of information, where word-of-mouth and consumer verification is once again becoming a powerful source.

For example, was ATV’s recent broadcast about “destructive forces” from Washington and London really driving the national education protests? Check out the 4,517 backlashes of comments on the program’s YouTube page, as pointed out by blogger, BadCanto.
