Lazy Hikes: Pik Shan Path

The runners and dog-walkers of Hong Kong Island will be furious at us for sharing this little gem, but quiet, leafy Pik Shan Path is perfect for an idle stroll that’s close to town and yet makes you feel like you’re in the wilderness.

This dirt trail hugs the western side of The Peak, leading you over bridges and streams and following Pok Fu Lam Road all the way back to the top of Kennedy Town, and eventually to Kotewall Road in the Mid-Levels. But despite its close proximity to civilization, you can hardly hear or see the road. With its gentle inclines, ample shade and distinct lack of people, it’s also ideal for novice trail runners who want to practice running outdoors.

If you’re feeling brave and want to go off-piste, you’ll find waterfalls, streams and shortcuts up to The Peak that are popular with elderly morning walkers. Handy note: the path becomes increasingly well-paved the closer to civilization you get.

Getting There: Catch a bus along Pok Fu Lam Road and get off at Pok Fu Lam Reservoir Road. Instead of going up The Peak like most of the walkers, follow the signs to Pik Shan Path. The path will eventually take you all the way to Kotewall Road in the Mid-Levels, but if you want to get off before that point, take the steep stairs down to your left (it’s well-signposted), which will take you to the gas station on Pok Fu Lam Road, where you’ll find buses to take you back to town.
