Lazy Hikes: Lion Rock Country Park to Amah Rock

If you don’t have it in you to scale the impressive (and challenging) Lion Rock, do the next best thing and walk up to Amah Rock, a boulder resembling a woman carrying a child on her back.

If you’re not already familiar with the legend, it goes as follows: a fisherman’s wife climbed a hill every day with her son to watch for the return of her husband—who had drowned, unbeknownst to her. To give the woman reprieve, the goddess of the sea turned her to stone so her soul could reunite with her husband’s.

Start at Tsz Wan Shan North Bus Terminus. Follow the concrete steps up to Sha Tin Pass, follow Wilson Trail and then follow the nearby catchwater until you see a signpost for Amah Rock. At 250 meters above sea level, the top of the hill has breathtaking views of the entire Sha Tin area—both trees and high-rises on either side. Oh, and you’ll be able to brag to your friends about how you’ve touched one of Hong Kong’s most well-known rock formations. The walk is six kilometers long and takes around two hours. Afterwards, retrace your steps or head down the MacLehose Trail if you’re in the mood for more walking.

Getting There: Take the MTR to Tai Wai, take exit C, and either take one of the various buses at Hung Mui Kuk Road, or walk along the road for around 900 meters until you get to its end, where the park’s entrance is. Alternatively, take the MTR to Wong Tai Sin and take a bus to Tsz Wan Shan North Bus Terminus.
