Lazy Hikes: Deepwater Bay to Repulse Bay
Don't say you're going on a hike and then never actually follow through—here's one of our easy-peasy picks.

Most folks might whiz right by these two beaches on the way to South Bay or Stanley. Next time, though, take a moment to stop and meander along the peaceful, scenic harborfront passageway that stretches between them.
This hike starts at Deepwater Bay, so feel free to take a break before you even begin, by taking a dip or sticking your toes into the white sand. At the far eastern side of the beach, past the stretch of fenced-in public barbecue pits parallel to Island Road, you’ll spot a paved path, called the Seaview Promenade, heading east and hugging the waterfront. Amble along the flat road to enjoy lovely views of the South China Sea, Middle Island (fun fact: part of the 1955 film “Love Is a Many Splendored Thing” was filmed there) and beyond.
Even at a leisurely pace, it only takes about half an hour to get to Repulse Bay, where the sand is equally white and the water for swimming is equally dubious. But upon arrival, there are plenty of rewards. Inside shopping and dining complex The Repulse Bay, you’ll find a Market Place by Jasons for picnic supplies. But presuming that the arduous trek didn’t render you too sweaty for proper dining, there’s also Spices (109 Repulse Bay Rd., 2292-2821), a superb restaurant serving Asian cuisine from Indian to Thai. Despite the restaurant’s luxurious feel, with its colonial-style balcony overlooking the water, the dress code’s casual—perfect for a post-hike treat.
Getting There: Take buses 6, 6A, 6X or 260 and get off at Deepwater Bay, or take minibus 40 (bound for Stanley) along Causeway Bay’s Tang Lung Street (the corner of Percival Street and Hennessy Road), and get off at Deepwater Bay.
