Experience Cantopera at the Yau Ma Tei Theatre

The Chinese Artists Association of HK and the HK Tourism Board have unveiled “Experience Cantopera – A Taste of Hong Kong’s Intangible Cultural Heritage”; a programme designed to create awareness and insight in to the world of Cantonese Opera.

Experience Cantopera at the Yau Ma Tei Theatre

With the use of videos and live performances, visitors will learn about the development of Cantonese opera and the distinct components of a performance including the music, vocal style and the symbolic meanings behind a performer’s movement and gestures. After the show, visitors will be invited to meet with the performers.

The programme will take place at the Yau Ma Tei Theatre, a Grade II historic building that was refurbished earlier this year.

The programme will run through Februar 2013. There will be a total of 72 performances, tickets for the October and November performances are now available at www.urbtix.com.hk.

The Yau Ma Tei Theatre features Cantonese opera performances on a daily basis. The decades-old abandoned cinema in Kowloon was refurbished this past summer and now acts as a centre for Cantonese Opera. For information on shows, visit www.lcsd.gov.hk/ymtt or call 2374-2598.
