Watch Out For...
Quiet Arbuthnot Road has a new resident:
Wild Grass (
1/F, 4-8 Arbuthnot Rd., Central, 2810-1189) is a beautiful, spacious resto that serves nose-to-tail dishes made from free-range OBE organic cattle grown on Australia’s massive pastures. When I hear the word “organic,” I usually think vegetarian, so in that sense Wild Grass is quite a special addition to the eco-conscious dining scene. Organic beef is supposed to taste gamier than its not-as-freely-raised compatriots, but at a recent media tasting, I couldn’t really tell from our sauce-drenched, flavorful slow-grilled and stewed beef shin and rump dishes. It was all just tasty meat to me! Besides beef, you can also have innards (such as kidney), fish and rotisserie chicken here.
Those who are familiar with Madam Sixty Ate will be glad to know that sister restaurant Sal Curioso (2/F, 32 Wyndham St., Central, 2537-7555) has opened its doors to provide more whimsical, quirky dishes to its diners in a 90-seater space surrounded by what looks like industrial-chic, cement-wash walls. Dishes will be a mix of Spanish, Italian and South American flair, with an element of cute added in. Squid popcorn, buttermilk-fried chicken and suckling pig will be served on top of ceviche-style tapas. Funky cocktails containing anchovies and olives are to be expected. Hmm.
While I wrote about
Laduree recently announcing its first shop in Hong Kong (scheduled to open this December), another prominent French brand has jumped one step ahead with a ready-for-business set-up at
Jasons Food & Living in Hysan Place. Just like Laduree,
Fauchon (
B2/F, Jasons Food & Living, Hysan Place, 500 Hennessy Rd., Causeway Bay) is a multi-portfolio brand that makes everything from gourmet foods to teas—but first and foremost, foodies will go ga-ga over its colorful macarons. Packed in cutesy girly boxes, these light-as-a-feather morsels come in classic flavors such as caramel, hazelnut and pistachio. If you’re thinking this isn’t the first time Fauchon has made it to our shores, you’d be right: there has been a Fauchon outlet at the airport since summer of last year. But, that airport outlet has been closed since August, and so there’s still only one retail shop in the city that serves Hong Kong customers.
