The seventh annual Asian Film Awards was held at the Convention Centre on Monday.
China's psychological thriller "Mystery" emerged as the evening's big winner. The film took home the awards for best film and screenplay, while its lead actress Qi Xi took home the best newcomer award. Winner of best screenwriter Lou Ye, thankful for the win after set backs because of the movie’s controversial subject matter, accepted the award on behalf of his two absent co-writers. 


Iranian/Turkish film "Rhino Season" was another notable winner, earning awards for best cinematographer, production design and visual effects. 
"This is the best I have achieved" proclaimed the proud 24-year-old director Farbod Khoshtinat, who went on to describe how his newfound glory will get him many girlfriends.


While "Mystery" and "Rhino Season" earned the most awards of the night, Filipino stars Eddie Garcia and Nora Aunor took home the best actor and actress awards for their stunning performances this year. 
Garcia, 87, starred as a gay man living alone with only his dog in "Bwakaw," and thanked his fans and supporters for embracing the film.


"I started acting in 1949, so all these years I have been honing my skill, because acting you have to learn it everyday," he said, adding that even after 64 years in the business he still has room to improve. Garcia also took home the People’s Choice Award.
Aunor's award honored her captivating performance in "Thy Womb," where she played an infertile woman living in a Muslim community in the Philippines.


The red carpet was filled with nominees, presenters and sponsors alike, with special appearances from several local celebrities including Anthony Wong, Sammy Hung, Gigi Leung and head juror Andy Lau. Arriving last and making a dramatic entrance on the red carpet was Michelle Yeoh, recipient of this year's Excellence in Asian Cinema Award. In her acceptance speech, she extolled those who have been on his side in the business, before literally rolling out a 10-foot scroll filled with names to emphasize the fact. "I have waited a very long time for this award," said the industry veteran, most famous for her roles in "Tomorrow Never Dies," "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," and "The Lady." 
With the end of this years AFA ceremony, Hong Kong still has more to offer for film fanatics. The Hong Kong International Film Festival is in the midst of its 17-day run, and will be showcasing over 300 local and international films at galas and screenings through April 2.
