Love Undercover (2002)
The epitome of the Hong Kong rom-com. Miriam Yeung plays Fong, a silly but likable cop who’s assigned to spy on a triad leader’s adopted son, Au (Daniel Wu). For starters, the plot is insanely unrealistic—not only could Fong never plausibly make the force, but Au is hot, rich AND nice? Come on! But the movie hooks you in with one goofy scene after another, particularly when the characters try to write “sir” in Chinese. It doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but it’s the cinematic perfection of silly, low-brow humor. (Directed by Joe Ma; 102 minutes.)
