Spend more money on your fake blood—trust me

Monstrous Makeovers

A couple Hallowe’ens ago, I went to a party as a “luau zombie.” I looked awesome, but bitterly regretted cheaping out on my fake blood (from Fa Yuen Street) when a few days later, I came up in a rash that was perfectly aligned with the blood drips I had painted on my forehead and mouth. Don’t be a chump like me: this hallowe’ekend, invest in some decent makeup. MAC has a special Halloween line by US makeup artist Rick Baker that provides all you need to make these ghoulish looks. The acrylic face paint pots are $200 each and come in red, green, white and black, or you could go for ghostly drama with paint sticks in black or white ($160 each). For a sickly look, these greeny-purply powder palettes ($380 each) will provide the depth of color you need for a real horrorshow. The line is available exclusively from its Elements counter. If that sounds like too much hard work, Flawless is putting its makeup artists on standby from Oct 26 to Nov 2 to create creepy looks for its customers. Make sure to book in advance—especially on the frightful weekend itself.

MAC Elements counter: Shop 1095, Elements, 1 Austin Rd. West, West Kowloon, 2196-8050.
Flawless: 4/F, Sea Bird House, 22-28 Wyndham St., Central, 2196-8050, www.flawless.hk.com.

Supplements City

Following Hong Kong’s affinity for turning streets into dedicated shopping destinations (Sneaker Street, Goldfish Street and Paper Offerings Street, to name a few), it seems as though Lyndhurst Terrace is turning into one long strip of health food and supplement stores. The stylish jewel in the crown, however, is the new Kiwi import, Wild Bounty. From the outside, it looks like a skincare brand, but actually, creams and lotions are only a small part of what it offers. Much of WB’s offerings are health supplements that made with ingredients from New Zealand’s natural resources. Start simple with kiwi and barley to aid digestion or spirulina capsules to boost your antioxidant intake, before moving onto the more “out there” supplements such as “Deer Blood” (literally, powdered deer blood, supposedly good for an iron boost) or the much-vaunted “Marine Collagen” pills, which are meant to help you maintain a youthful complexion. If you’re like me and are too disorganized to take pills every day, there’s also top-quality manuka honey for sale, as well as a manuka honey skincare line (there’s also a bee venom line, which they’re touting as “nature’s Botox.” Don’t try it if you have a history of anaphylaxis). If you buy $1,000 worth of products (which ain’t hard!) you’ll be treated to a complimentary (very relaxing and non-painful) bee venom facial (valued at $699) in their delightful mezzanine treatment room.

Let’s Splunch

While I’m not sure the term “Splunch” (that’s spa-plus-lunch) is going to catch on, there’s no denying that the Ritz-Carlton’s new promotion for first-time visitors to its dizzyingly high-up spa is one you’ll want to check out. Available on weekdays only, the deal costs $1,150 per head, which includes a 60-minute massage or facial, a lunch buffet at Café 103, a mocktail or glass of sparkling wine, pool and fitness center access and a $250 spa voucher to be used on your next visit (90-minute treatments only). The deal is available from now until November 30. See you there for Splunch!
