The Teppanroom, Little Bao, The Roundhouse, Spasso, Brick Lane and SumoSushiSakeHK

New…
Joining the ranks of no-reservations, super-hipster, casual-but-pricey diners is Little Bao (G/F, 66 Staunton St., Central, 2194-0202), which started out as a stall at Sunday’s hipster-tastic Island East Markets but quickly became popular for their pork belly baos: think of them as mantou burgers. Take your pick of chicken, pork, fish or veggie—they all come served squished between two fluffy mantou buns and loaded with sauce. There are also fusiony Chinese sides to choose from, as well as a deep-fried mantou with green tea ice cream for dessert.
The newly opened The Teppanroom (Grand Hyatt Hong Kong, 1 Harbour Rd., Wan Chai, 2588-1234), is a separate division of Kaetsu at the Grand Hyatt, offering fusion dishes cooked on the teppan grill. It’s not exactly teppanyaki, nor is it Japanese—in fact, it’s anything and everything that can spend time on a sizzling metal surface. We’re talking French spring chicken, corn wraps, pineapple flambés—you probably shouldn’t, and most likely won’t, be getting any teriyaki beef rolls here.
Gastropub The Roundhouse Kitchen + Beer (62 Peel St., Central, 2366-4880) has relocated from Tsim Sha Tsui to SoHo, continuing to serve patrons beers from around the world as well as hearty pub fare like ribs, steaks and fried things.
Another TST relocation: Spasso (68 Mody Rd., Tsim Sha Tsui East, 2730-8027) has finally called it quits at Harbour City and moved down the block to Mody Road instead. It’s still Italian, and there will still be an outdoor terrace.
Brick Lane (4/F, Citic Tower, 1 Tim Mei Avenue, Admiralty, 2363-2500), also from TST, is replicating its successful self across the harbor with a sweeping space in Admiralty. Named after the same trendy street in London, BL serves quintessentially English breakfasts and artisanal coffees as well as comfort foods including shepherd’s pie, fish and chips, and bangers and mash. There’s also a brief nod to Brick Lane’s Indian influence, with Kerala chicken curry on the menu.
Artichoke Canteen (3/F, Harbour Industrial Center, 10 Lee Hing St., Ap Lei Chau, 2580-0293) is a new veggie-focused restaurant-slash-art space in one of those nondescript industrial units in Ap Lei Chau. Enjoy relatively healthy dishes like wood-roasted artichoke, poached organic eggs, and quinoa salads in a spacious and relaxed setting.
