Our rival city-state Singapore was all in a flap last week when the Singaporean chapter of the hacker organization Anonymous broke into the website of the Straits Times and posted a YouTube video, threatening to cripple the city’s networks unless the Singaporean government started serving its people. Imagine our surprise when a similar video recording was dropped off at our office this morning. We’ve transcribed it below:
[Screen lights up to a lone figure wearing a “V for Vendetta” mask. His voice is obscured.]
“V”: Greetings, government of Hong Kong.
We are Anonymous. We are the silent guardians, watching while the rest of Hong Kong sleeps. We sit in the lift lobbies of your conscience, keeping watch until we nod off in the early hours of the morning.
You have been sleeping soundly for too long, and the people have suffered. But we are here to shake you from your capitalist comfort. We are here to jolt you from your fevered dreams. We are here to take this “sleeping” metaphor past its breaking point.
We will force Hong Kong into chaos. Anarchy will reign, and the city will burn!
OK, not anarchy. I’m an accountant, and I think that anarchy might make it difficult to bill my hours. But a certain level of social discontent will reign!
