Super Awesome Event

Big news in the world of Skin Deep: HK Magazine is hosting a Christmas event for readers in partnership with Benefit, the San Francisco-based beauty brand that’s known for its tongue-in-cheek packaging and top-notch beauty products. It’s on Friday, November 29 from 7-10pm at Benefit’s counter in Lab Concept. Expect champagne, nibbles and the chance to preview Benefit’s Christmas gift sets—don’t say we never spoil you! And if you’re lucky, you might snag a bag of Benefit goodies to take home too. Spaces are limited, so make sure to RSVP at www.hk-magazine.com/benefit to secure a spot. See you there!

The Advent of Beauty Calendars

If you’re obsessed with nail polish, then get yourself to Lane Crawford and snatch up this Christmas-edition “Mini Mani Month” advent calendar from London nail polish brand Ciate. Behind each window is a mani-tastic treat; there are 19 mini polishes, four textured manicure tips and a full-sized bottle of nail color as a special treat for Christmas Eve. What kind of advent calendar would I like to see next? How about one that has a sample-sized hangover remedy behind each window? We’re barely through November and the insane socializing is starting to get to me already… bleugh. The “Mini Mani Month” gift set is $560.

Available from Lane Crawford IFC, 3/F, IFC Mall, 8 Finance St., Central, 2118-3388.

Appetite for Instruction

I officially joined the Hong Kong one percent a couple of months ago, thanks to my recent acquisition of a shiny new built-in oven. Obviously, I have been going baking mad and expanding my repertoire to include healthy desserts that will sate my sweet tooth without exponentially expanding my bottom. My favorite thing to cook recently is a “healthy” chocolate chip cookie pie from the Chocolate Covered Katie blog, which is free of flour and butter, instead using—wait for it—chickpeas as a base. Sounds wrong as all hell, but it actually works beautifully and has the added advantage of being gluten-free. Sure, the dump-truck full of sugar and chocolate chips in there diminishes the “goodness” somewhat, but you can actually halve the sugar in the recipe and it’ll still taste just as good. Anyway, this recipe is super easy, and the ingredients can be found in any Hong Kong supermarket, which makes it a winner in my eyes. I’ve been baking it in a loaf pan and cutting it into “breakfast bars” to eat first thing in the morning.
