Adrienne Lau
Singer Adrienne Lau enjoyed a successful career in the US before moving back to Hong Kong and launching Show Club in October. The press has dubbed her the “Asian Beyoncé” and she’s the first Chinese-American woman to have two singles in the Billboard Top 20. She tells Andrea Lo about life as an entertainer, addresses rumors about a lawsuit and recounts the worst show she’s ever played.

I grew up both here and in LA. I’m really lucky because I can speak and write Chinese.
I decided to move here because this is where I was born, and where I feel like I’m home. The US is something I could always go back to.
I moved here on my own. My parents are still in the US. To leave your own country by yourself to go to another, you have to have courage to do it. It took me a while to gather that.
I was hosting a program [in the US]. That led me to doing an indie movie. From that, I was introduced to a record label—and then I got signed pretty much right away.
I was 20 when this all happened. I pretty much had a Cinderella story. I didn’t have to send out any tapes.
I’ve always wanted to become an entertainer.
