Illegal Parking Fine to Double The police have proposed increasing the fine for illegal parking from $320 to $820. Chief Superintendent Paul Strip said the current parking fine wasn’t enough: more than 860,000 parking tickets were issued in the first ten months of 2013, a 13 percent rise on last year. Double-parking and illegal parking hotspots include Tsim Sha Tsui, Kwun Tong and Central’s World-Wide House. The price of a parking fine hasn’t changed since 1994. Our take: If there were enough parking spaces, most wouldn’t risk a ticket. The Father of the Airplane Olive Dies Kwok Kam-kei, the father of the traditional Cantonese “airplane olive” snack, has died at the age of 88. Uncle Kei gave the pickled snack its name when he started selling them 75 years ago. An excellent thrower, he began tossing bags of preserved olives from the street into the homes of customers. He became widely known in Hong Kong for his olive-selling antics: a movie was made in 1959 about Uncle Kei and his unique delivery method. As buildings became taller over the years, Uncle Kei mostly operated his business from a stall. He is survived by his two children and his wife, who continue to sell olives at his usual spot in Kowloon City. Our take: RIP, Uncle Kei, and thanks for making Hong Kong more awesome! Dental Health Below WHO Standards A new report from the Department of Health has found that dental health in preschoolers and the elderly hasn’t improved in the past 13 years. Compared to data collected in 2001, five-year-olds have more decayed teeth, and senior citizens have received more decayed tooth treatments. The over-80 population of Hong Kong only have 19 teeth on average, which is below WHO standards. Another report from the HKU Faculty of Dentistry finds that our 18-year-olds fare no better: only six out of the 324 participants had completely healthy gums, and nine out of 10 teenagers have buildup of plaque on their teeth. According to the research team, the general dental situation in HK is worse than in the mainland. Our take: Yikes. One more for the list, CY!
