What a Shell-out

Umai Ramen Sumibiyaki (Shop G02, G/F, D2 Place, 9 Cheung Yee St., Cheung Sha Wan, 2743-8011), a robatayaki joint in Lai Chi Kok’s refurbished D2 Place shopping center, is serving single seed oysters from the Karatomari Fishermen’s Cooperative in Fukuoka. If you’re asking, “What does that mean?” allow me to refer you to tiny.cc/hk-oyster for a full explanation. Essentially, it’s a different way of farming the oysters so they grow up more handsomely shaped, and hopefully tastier too—they’re generally supposed to be sweeter than other varieties. The single seed oysters at Umai will be going for $39 each, served raw. The restaurant is also allowing diners the option of cooking another brand of oysters—Ebisu, also farmed by Karatomari—on a binchotan charcoal grill at their own tables. But it’s not all about oysters here: being a robatayaki joint and all, Umai also specializes in grilled goods, many of which are served on sticks.
