Hong Kong’s Rugby Sevens: the crowning glory of our city’s event calendar and a rite of passage for global Sevens fans and local party enthusiasts alike. But come game day(s), it’s easy to get overwhelmed by the insanity taking place behind the gates. Worry not, Sevens newbs: We have everything you need to get you through the city’s craziest weekend.
Be warned: some Sevens goers are more prepared than others. Newcomers typically look to the wise ways of the obvious regulars on Saturday, and come better dressed the day after. But why waste time? Stock up on these essential items for a (relatively) clean weekend.
- Closed-toe comfortable shoes
I can’t stress enough how important this is. Drinks and food are left on the floor, spilled—or tossed around the stadium. I typically go with combat boots (I just add shorts, a tank top and a braid and tell everyone I’m Lara Croft) but rain boots, ankle booties and trainers are just as good. Just don’t wear a pair you’re particularly attached to.
- Cheap sunglasses
Intoxicated people will take these off your face and wear them for five minutes, before dropping them into a soggy meat pie. My favorites are the brightly colored wayfarers at the Ladies Market in Mong Kok, or a snazzy pair from Cotton On.
- Sunscreen

The weather forecast for the Sevens weekend changes every year. Sometimes it rains, sometimes it’s cold and sometimes the sun is in full force. Keep your face from turning tomato red with a handy tube of sunscreen from Boots (available at Mannings).
- Tiny raincoat
They typically have these on hand at the stadium, but it’s better to grab a few beforehand at 7-Eleven.
- Tissues and antibacterial gel

You know why.
- Jacket or hoodie you can keep in your bag or tie around your waist
I always get cold when the sun goes down. And since 90s fashion is totally rad right now, tying a zip-up hoodie or thick flannel shirt around your waist is somewhat acceptable. If you drop it on the floor, make your peace and say your goodbyes.
- Backpack for boys; cross-body bag for girls
Essential for a worry-free weekend. Just don’t bring outside food or beverages in, since everyone gets checked at the entrance. Make sure the bag you bring can be properly sealed (zips are your friend) and it’s the type of material you can wipe clean at the end of the day.
- Portable phone charger
Thank me later. Only the bravest bring cameras with them, so if you’re like the remaining 99 percent you’ll be snapping pics with your smartphone. A second battery or portable charger is a lifesaver, and it’s great when travelling abroad. Two birds, one stone.
- Take a pouch, leave the wallet
Do you really want to bring your Prada wallet to the Sevens? Do you, D-bag?
- Wear clothes you don’t care about
It really is super important that you stick to this. You’ll feel more relaxed, which allows you to enjoy the rugby and all of the hilarious group costumes. The only item of good clothing worth wearing is your team’s 2014 Sevens jersey. At the end of the day, we’re all here to support our countries and watch some world-class rugby. And drink Pimm’s. Lots of Pimm’s.
