Nadim Abbas

Installation artist whose work hides violence in the innocuous.
 

 
Watch out for: Other than this year’s Art Basel art bar (17/F, Soundwill Plaza II—Midtown, 1 & 29 Tang Lung St., Causeway Bay), Abbas recieved early acclaim for “I Would Prefer Not To (Rorschach)”—a series of Hong Kong-style aluminium window grilles based on patterns from the Rorschach test. They’re currently on show in the super-trendy Ping Pong 129 (129 Second St., Nam Cheong Hse, Sai Ying Pun, 9158-1584).
 

Silas Fong
Video/new media artist who exhibited at the “Hong Kong Eye” group show last year.


 


 
Watch out for: Fong’s slo-mo video work of random people on the MTR. Check out the voyeuristic “Upon The Escalator.” 
 
Sarah Lai
Oil painter who works with a serene and muted palette.
 

	
	 

Watch out for: Her calming and melancholic paintings of the sea and other bodies of water, collected in her exhibition “Safety Island.”
 
Morgan Wong
Performance/installation artist who works on high concept pieces.
 

	
	 

Watch out for: “Filing Down a Steel Bar Until A Needle Is Made,” performed at the Tintype Gallery, London.
 
Au Hoi-lam
Oil painter and mixed-media artist, known for her meticulously created, delicate abstract works. Lately she’s been focusing on making softer, textural art.
 

	
	 

Watch out for: Her mournful autobiographical exhibition “My Father Is Over The Ocean” which is dedicated to her late father.
Koon Wai-bong
Ink artist known for his detailed brushwork and luxurious foliage. His work is in the permanent collection of the Hong Kong Museum of Art.

 
Watch out for: His large scale panels of bamboo foliage, with each leaf individually articulated.
 
Lam Tung-pang
Artist who works on large-scale paintings and unconventional “painting’” methods.
 

	
	 

Watch out for: His 1.5-meter-tall wood panels of traditional Chinese painting, made entirely with burn marks and charcoal.
 
Kwan Sheung-chi
Multidisciplinary artist known for his video works and politically charged pieces. 
 

	
	 

Watch out for: “Doing It With Mrs. Kwan,” an instructional video on how to make pepper spray at home, which will be showing at Art Basel HK’s film program this year.  
 
Lee Kit
Represented Hong Kong at the 55th Venice Biennale with his show, “You (you).” Lee challenges the audience 
to approach the objects in his installations as they would everyday objects.
 

	
	 

Watch out for: His painted cloth and towels, hung next to a sink and toilet.
 
Tsang Kin-wah
A painter known for rearranging words (usually profanity) in the style of beautiful floral wallpaper. His 2011 exhibition at the Mori Art Museum in Japan brought him great acclaim.
 

	
	 

Watch out for: Tsang’s newer works are often video installations: his most recent “Ecce Homo Trilogy,” looks into the way humans judge dictators.
