Joe Bananas Back in Business

After a sad farewell to this Wan Chai favorite back in February, Joe Bananas is emerging anew at the same location this July. The old Luard Road mainstay first opened in 1986 and continued for 28 years, becoming a beloved spot for many a partygoer. Newly revamped, the bar looks fresh with urban-chic interiors with exposed bricks, steel, stone, wood and timber while retaining some of its original décor—like the John Lennon mural on the wall.

Loyal fans have another thing to celebrate: “Crazy Happy Hour” from 5-10pm will carry on weekdays with two live house bands, and a DJ spinning until dawn. Expect the usual bar snacks and reasonably priced drinks, as well as new lunch sets and a semi-buffet from Monday to Friday.

What did our readers have to say when Joe Bananas closed?

I joined in November '86 and we spent many an evening there. I remember the management and staff did not always get in well and one night they were wearing shirts that read "the beatings will continue until the morale of the staff improves." Legend.

I believe this is the last place we went on that epic night you and your friend took me out many years ago? Not that I fully remember ... What I do remember was how nauseous I was at the Mothers Choice gala the following night.

How many cocktails were invented in that place? A castaway without the shit if I recall correctly plus many, many more... I also recall two-for-one B52's sessions.... James Vinall's pink jacket, a boozy session on crutches, umm I seem to remember royal slammers at 2am on somebody's stag session…
