Raymond Wong Yuk-man
Independent lawmaker, author and radio host Raymond “Mad Dog” Wong Yuk-man has founded three publications and two political parties. Known for his outspokenness and frequent outbursts in Legco, he made headlines earlier this month when he threw a glass at CY Leung during a legislative session. He tells Andrea Lo about quitting his own parties, being linked to triads, and why he threw that glass.

I was born in Hong Kong in 1951. The Baby Boomer generation is the foundation of society on every level—politics, finance and culture, the world over.
The Chinese have an expression: “Born in poverty, die in comfort.” When you grow up in a difficult environment, you cherish [what you come to have].
The relationships between people were simpler back then. People were happier and less calculating.
I studied journalism. Later on I became a professor of journalism and communications.
In 1990, I published a political bi-weekly. Hong Kong was becoming more political—it was about to have its first direct election in Legco.
It ceased publication after nine months. Hongkongers had zero interest in politics. They would rather be reading the gossip columns.
