Cause to Travel
Need to balance out some bad karma? Here’s your chance: six Hong Kong hikers are taking on 5,985-meter-tall Mt. Kilimanjaro for a good cause, and you can help. Calling themselves the “Kilimanjaro 6,” this team of expat women is raising money for two Philippine-based nonprofits: St. Rita Orphanage, so it can build facilities for abandoned or neglected kids; and nation-building organization Gawad Kalinga, which rebuilds homes affected by Typhoon Haiyan. The goal? To raise $100,000 for these charities by the end of November. The group has set up several fundraising events: a bachelor auction at Fly in August, and a charity junk in September. There are prizes up for auction too—think two-nights at the Indigo Pearl in Phuket, a stay at Alila Ubud, and return flights to Bali. Even if you’re not up to climbing Africa’s tallest mountain, you can help the Kilimanjaro 6 take a step towards their goal.
