A mid-sized dog was seen standing on the southbound tracks at Sheung Shui station at around 9:50am yesterday morning, prompting a halt to train services as MTR employees attempted to rescue the dog.

But after an eight-minute halt, the MTR’s Operations Control Centre resumed train services, instructing train drivers to proceed slowly and under manual control. 20 minutes later, remains of same dog were found in Fanling station: it had been hit by an Intercity Through Train originating in Guangzhou.

Following the incident, a local animal welfare organization has launched an online petition, requesting that the MTR Corporation investigate the incident. They have raised three questions: why the MTR did not stop the train which caused the incident; why they were unable to remove the dog from the tracks in the 30-minute window; and why they failed to communicate effectively with the train which hit the dog.

Over 64,000 people have signed the petition. There is also an English-language petition demanding an investigation into the incident.
