Azure Memories
Hangzhou ups its count of high-end hotels with The Azure Qiantang from Starwood’s luxury collection. Debuting in early September, the property borrows its name from “Memories of the South,” a poem by Tang Dynasty poet Bai Juyi about China’s natural beauty. The hotel is right up against the Qiantang River, making for great views if you manage to visit during the famous tidal bore—an amazing feat of nature that’s best seen during the autumnal equinox, when a wave, up to 30 feet tall, rushes down the river. Head here while the opening rates are on: it’s RMB1,200 ($1,514) a night for a deluxe room through 2014.

It's all Azure in Hangzhou
What’s New, Chengdu?
Well, for starters: the St. Regis. The brand may be a century old, but this hotel is brand-spanking new. From the outside, you can’t miss the striking all-glass façade, and inside, you’ll find art deco-inspired rooms blended with Chinese elements. It seems this old dog has learned a few new tricks, with in-room iPad controllers, plus Nespresso machines and massage rain showers. There’s also an outdoor “sky” bar with great views of the city, and the bloody marys from The Drawing Room resto are spiked with Sichuan peppers. And yes, those signature St. Regis butlers will be there too.
Opening rates from RMB1,750 ($2,208) through 2014. 99 Tidu St., Chengdu, (+86) 28-6287-6666, www.stregis.com/chengdu.
