Po Kong Village Road Park

Po Long Village Road Park is a paradise for cyclists, with a dedicated area for beginners, as well as an elevated cycling track and a BMX track for those after a bigger challenge. Constructed along the naturally hilly terrain, the elevated track was the first ever of its kind to be built in Hong Kong. It’s a one-way path and every rider is required to wear a helmet.

Difficulty Level: Easy
Starting Point: Get off at Diamond Hill MTR station; the park is about a 15-minute walk away.
Duration: 5 minutes per lap
Distance: 1km per lap
Bike rental: $30 per hour from Bicycle Rental Kiosk, Po Kong Village Road Park, 9821-9930.

Fanling to Tai Wo

If you want to take a closer look at village life in Hong Kong, this route should allow you to soak up a little culture—while getting a good leg workout too. It’s a smooth ride, with no steep slopes or bumpy roads—but there are some challenging points, including a set of stairs mid-route. There’s not much greenery to provide shade, so load up on the sunscreen and water before you hit the road.

Difficulty Level: Moderate
Starting Point: Catch bus 373 from Statue Square in Central to Wah Ming Bus Terminal.
Duration: 2 hours, round trip
Distance: 14km
Bike rental: Around $30-40 per hour from bike shops lining Fanling’s Luen Wo Market.

Chi Ma Wan in Lantau

This trail for advanced mountain bikers is a circular route from Mui Wo to Pui O. It’s fairly technical and challenging, with tight turns, bumpy paths and steps to ride over. The rewards however, include a scenic coastal view (though you should probably keep your eyes on the path) and a good, solid workout. Watch out for the wandering wildlife!

Difficulty Level: Hard
Starting Point: Cycle the coastal trail from Mui Wo to Chi Ma Wan and its extension trail and return the same way, or ride the coastal trail and the full Chi Ma Wan Trail.
Duration: 30-40 minutes
Distance: 9.5km
Bike rental: $30 per hour or $60 for the day from Friendly Bike Shop (though you’ll probably want to BYO for this tricky trail), Shop B, 13 Mui Wo Ferry Pier Rd., Mui Wo, Lantau, 2984-2278.
