This year, HK Magazine has been looking at the future of our wonderful city, asking the question: what next? As we inch towards the expiration of the Basic Law just three decades away, the city has never been more conflicted.

Over the course of the year we've been asking if there's a solution to the problems built into our political system; wondering if Hong Kong's future leaders have what it takes to turn our city around. But we've also found signs of hope and change in Hong Kong that go beyond protest. The future of Hong Kong may still be bright—but it's not going to be easy.

The Mayor of Hong Kong
It’s clear that China will not allow us to select whoever we want as Chief Executive. In “The Mayor of Hong Kong,” we propose that we should accept this reality, and instead create a powerful new position we can elect by universal suffrage. Hong Kong is a top-tier world city—we need someone who can run it properly. Let the CE deal with China. We need a mayor instead.

The New Central
Occupy wasn’t the only thing to happen to Central this year. The entire district has transformed as major infrastructure and revitalization projects have come online. Central has changed forever—and for the better.
