The 10 Best Restaurants on Hillier Street
From hole-in-the-wall enclaves to hipster havens, Hillier Street is the main artery of Sheung Wan’s dining scene. Evelyn Lok checks out the best bites on the block.

1. What Does the Fox Say
You know it’s hip when it’s got an ampersand in the name and Foxtail & Broomcorn is as painstakingly trendy as it gets, offering MSG-free, healthy variations of Asian noodles prepared using western cooking methods. All its dishes are inspired by cities around the world: For instance, the Tokyo ($78) is a hearty bowl of chicken broth ramen with beef ribs, mushrooms, and an onsen egg on top; while the Hangzhou ($68) pairs fresh Shanghainese noodles with pork belly in a soy-based Zhajiang sauce.
84 Jervois St., Sheung Wan, 2415-2555.

2. Bro-zoned
The baristas at Brew Bros can make a mean flat white. This Melbourne-inspired café has a woodsy, Japanese minimalist feel and the husband-and-wife duo who run it guarantee friendly, neighborly service. The breakfast and lunch sets aren’t bad either: salmon bagel and salad lunch sets for $65, or a hefty breakfast fry-up for $115. But be sure to go early to nab seats, because there are all of maybe six spots in this tiny café.
Shop F2, LG/F, 33 Hillier St., Sheung Wan, 2572-0238.

3. Great Meats
Newest to the area is Yakiniku Great, which opened at the top of Hillier at the beginning of the year. This carnivore’s dream is a sleek Japanese barbecue spot serving up an extensive list of beef cuts: Australian or Japanese Kuroge wagyu, multiple types of ox tongue, offal, and even prime beef sashimi. Plates of beef on average will only set you back $98 each. Be sure to order plenty of sake and shochu highballs: what’s a yakiniku feast without it?
