The Ballad of CY Leung

In honor of our three years under CY Leung, we present you with this biographical ballad...

CY Leung had a humble start:
He was good in school and had business smarts
He set his mind to achieve great feats:
He made his millions in a few short weeks.
He was the mighty Leung Chun-ying!
With just one weakness... he LOVED Beijing.

The city was changing and the power was too:
Could CY lead where Tsang fell through?
He beat Henry Tang to the leadership position:
Illegal basements don’t look good on politicians.
Things are looking good for Leung Chun-ying:
Third CE of Hong Kong and he LOVES Beijing.

But now we’re at the point where the hero’s in a pickle:
For the public is the public, and the public’s always fickle.
Tang was not alone with his structures not-quite legal:
And hypocrisy’s a bad look for a champion of the people.
It’s looking rather tougher for Leung Chun-ying:
At least he’s got some backup, cause he LOVES Beijing.

No one would say it’s easy when you’re running a whole nation:
It’s even harder when you’re pushing national education.
The people hit the streets and CY had to cave in:
Easily explained away, though: just kids misbehavin’!
Things are looking down for Leung Chun-ying:
This would all be simpler if he didn’t LOVE Beijing.

But it doesn’t get much easier and the public ain’t impressed:
This is a hero’s story—he should be WINNING all his quests!
But he cannot waver: has a party line to follow.
He’s got to smile and bow, though his promises are hollow.
Is there still a chance for Leung Chun-ying?
The man is still a human, though he LOVES Beijing.

Suddenly from Xi Jinping, a little declaration:
It’s clear now what he thinks of universal nomination.
“Remember that old thing we had, One Country and Two Systems?
Think more in terms of One: Two goes down the cistern.
Who will push this though but Leung Chun-ying?
After all, we trust you: for you LOVE Beijing.”

So CY has to throw his weight behind his Beijing masters.
People screech and people moan, and it all gets kinda faster.
There are students on the street and they’re seething with frustration.
Gas ‘em quick and get them gone!  .... ....
                                                                                 Misread THAT situation.
What the heck is going on, Leung Chun-ying?
Do you love your people, though you LOVE Beijing?

CY does the silent thing, eschews communication:
The people turn upon themselves (with some manipulation)
He waits until they all get bored and clears the mess away
The protesters are young and poor! Who cares what they say?
You’ve done the job to some degree, Leung Chun-ying:
A pat on the back, cause you LOVE Beijing.

Time to push some reforms through—they’ve come down from the bosses
But how do you pass laws when every move is hit by losses?
Your allies down in Legco can’t arrange a simple vote:
They’d rather Whatsapp Jasper Tsang with dumb emoji notes.
He just can’t catch a break, can Leung Chun-ying:
He may love the PRC; but has he love from Beijing?

What’s the moral, boys and girls, for our ballad’s star?
Don’t go chasing power: you’ll be happier by far.
Work on your media savvy, skip naughty erections
And do your best to get appointed somewhere with elections.
Then when people hate on you and call you lame or brain-dead
You can turn around and say: “You VOTED FOR ME, dickhead.”
That’s where our story ends for now, of Leung Chun-ying:
A man with just one weakness... he REALLY LOVES Beijing.
