Andrew Carthy Never Plans His Marathon DJ Sets

The British DJ, producer and cartoonist, known better as Mr. Scruff, is infamous for his eclectic tastes and will spin at Clockenflap.

What do you have in store for us at your Clockenflap set? A real mixture of music. I am delighted to be playing after Kid Koala, so it will be a Ninja double bill on Sunday! I never plan my DJ sets, so I am going to see how the atmosphere is on the day and use that as my inspiration. I have never played in Hong Kong before, so am looking forward to learning about the place and people this weekend.

You're known for your marathon sets, so how do you keep the music fresh? By watching and paying attention to what is going on around me. Being able to share some amazing music with an open-minded crowd is a very special thing. I try to not stick to one thing for too long. I always enjoy myself, and that comes through in the music. The communication goes both ways.

Which three of your favorite artists would you feel could represent your musical tastes? [American jazz poet] Sun Ra for the depth, humour and range of his work, [American DJ] Afrika Bambaataa for being a breakbeat pioneer and having an amazingly broad taste in music, and [British DJ] Floating Points for both his production and DJ sets.

How does it feel to have your track on pretty much every single Windows computer in the world? Quite lucky! It definitely helped spread the word about my music.
