On an MSNBC show, conservative commentator Ann Coulter called Asian American protesters outside a Donald Trump rally “Mandarins”—an archaic term used by the West to refer to Chinese officials in imperial China. China stopped operating under an emperor in 1912. In defense of her word choice, Coulter insisted that the signs the protesters used were in the Mandarin dialect.
