I've long admired the Smitten Kitchen food blog smittenkitchen.com. Its author, New Yorker Deb Perelman, is funny and entertaining, and her photography makes her food look delicious.

So I was pleased - both for her and her followers - that a collection of her recipes has now been published in book form. Yes, I realise it's cheaper to look on her website for the recipes (because the ones in the book are still available online), but I'm the old-fashioned type, who still likes to pore over cookbooks. And besides, if you buy the British edition, the measurements have been converted from volume to metric weights.

Her recipes are varied and interesting, and it's only when you examine them closely that you realise that many of them are quite healthy. They include butternut squash and caramelised onion galette; aubergine and three cheese calzone; tomato and spring onion shortcakes with whipped goats' cheese; Mexican stuffed peppers; sesame-spiced turkey meatballs and smashed chickpea salad; sweet and sour holiday brisket with roasted potato and carrot coins; and buttered popcorn cookies.
