Win by a neck In case you are wondering, and you probably are, it's now OK to wear scarves again and not be accused of being either a pretentious, effete wannabe philosopher or a tragic hipster. We are loving the latest scarf collection from H&M, which spans the classic wool scarf (top, second left; HK$149) to more formal items such as this evening scarf (top left; HK$249) - and at those prices you should probably bag yourself both. H&M is at Silvercord, tel: 3521 1171.

Step it up The trainer market has gone crazy and now everyone is getting in on the act. Where once you could just about keep up with the latest fare from Nike, Adidas or Puma, nowadays trainer-heads are looking to independents and, most curiously, the major fashion houses, for the hottest footwear. We are loving the latest line from Lanvin, which gets top marks for quality, simplicity of design and the odd fashion flourish. We recommend the low-top grey suede tennis shoe with shiny patent-leather toecap (above, second left; HK$4,200), which mixes a classic shape and fabrication with a bit of high fashion. We also love this laser-cut perforated leather trainer (above left; HK$7,500), with its futuristic twist. Lanvin is at 10 Ice House Street, Central, tel: 2205 0013.

Take it down a notch Sometimes, in the loud, proud and flamboyant world of fashion, you yearn for something that's calm, simple and incredibly well-made. DKNY is a brand that doesn't take the sledgehammer approach to men's fashion, and some may find that a little too "safe". But guys who want comfortable, fashionable clothing for this season could do worse than check out our picks from the DKNY autumn collection, including this ready-for-the-season look of leather-trim zip mac (HK$7,590), gingham dress shirt (HK$990), crew-neck jumper (HK$2,390) and navy trousers (HK$1,990; all right). The bag and shoes are not available in Hong Kong. We also like this simple but effective look of leather-trim black coat with notch collar (HK$6,590), crew-neck jumper (HK$1,590), button-down shirt (HK$1,590) and black trousers (HK$1,590; all far right). DKNY is at Silvercord, 30 Canton Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, tel: 2377 9900.

Warm and cool Hackett is on the verge of opening its second Hong Kong store, at Landmark Men, so it would seem the city's gents have taken a liking to the quintessentially British brand. And, with winter edging ever closer, they should be making a beeline to Hackett for the winter overcoat collection, which includes this snazzy navy padded army jacket (top, second right; HK$5,800) and the heavy duty duffle coat (top right; HK$8,400). Hackett is in Eton Tower, 8 Hysan Avenue, Causeway Bay, tel: 3101 0008.
