Carina de Jager, a South African and hotly tipped rising talent who takes her inspiration from nature. Having trained as a silversmith and studied jewellery at the Cass Faculty of Art, Architecture and Design at London Metropolitan University, she now creates luxurious handmade jewellery at her London workshop. Her work garnered recognition by industry leaders at last year's International Jewellery London event, where she was honoured with the Bright Young Gem award, a prize that recognises new and notable individuals in the jewellery industry.
from a distance it looks like de Jager has gathered a multitude of fine silk thread and dipped it into various precious metals. We love the haphazard style and lack of structure throughout the collection. Not only are these pieces easily adaptable but they also make a statement without being overwhelming. In short, they do exactly what accessories should.
the complex nature of de Jager's handiwork lends itself best to rings and cuff bracelets. We've fallen hard for the Angkor cuff in gold (above left; HK$4,880), which would look great with a simple white shirt, or if you're feeling particularly indulgent, as a set of two over a long-sleeved slinky black dress. The Palenque rings (both above right; HK$2,735 for gold and HK$2,465 for the silver) remind us of caramelised-sugar spun baskets.
