1. Fine lines The summer’s barely started and we’re already sick of floral prints on tops, so we’re thinking it might be an idea to cock a snook at all the tragic fashionistas and go back to good old dependable stripes. They have to be quality stripes, of course, and we recommend Sunspel’s offerings, which come in either polo (left; HK$880) or round-neck tee (right; HK$550). Job done and to hell with trends. Sunspel is available at Kapok, 3 Sun Street, Wan Chai, tel: 2520 0114.

2. Tote sweet Just 10 years ago, if you tried to convince the average Joe to sport a tote bag you'd probably have been met with more than a little resistance. Once the preserve of women and early adopting hipsters, the tote has become a fashion essential for men the world over, so much so, it's a wonder why there was a problem in the first place. There are plenty of totes to choose from but we do like the Bleeker canvas collection from Coach (pictured; HK$4,350 each) that comes in a variety of colours and prints. Coach is at 36 Queen's Road Central, tel: 2868 9676.

3. Point blanc range He may not have much to do with his eponymous label these days, but Martin Margiela’s shadow looms large over the world of fashion. The secretive Belgian wasn’t part of the radical Antwerp Six but his influence has been just as important, not least for his minimalist monochromatic aesthetic. Maison Martin Margiela, the label, has carried on where the master left off and nowadays it’s a bit more open to collaboration and taking the MMM “look” to the masses. We absolutely love the link up with Converse, which is into its second collection and this time features leather rather than canvas Chuck Taylors and Jack Purcells (pictured; HK$1,799 for each pair). The trainers are hand painted in white and, as the paint flakes off, you are left with some truly unique footwear. C’est magnifique! Converse is available at Maison Martin Margiela, 10 Ice House Street, Central, tel: 2869 7707.

4. Supreme leader We've waxed lyrical about Kim Jones before but the Louis Vuitton menswear designer is the coolest guy in fashion and his spring-summer show proves it. Inspired by the classic American road trip, with music provided by REM no less, the show was full of street-savvy pieces and subversive tailoring while never losing that luxury LV feel. Neatly encapsulating where Jones has taken Louis Vuitton menswear was the first look to come down the runway: constructed two-button grey jacket (HK$23,600), matching trousers (HK$6,600), casual check shirt (HK$6,100), paisley bandana artfully worn around the neck (HK$2,750) and Governor Richelieu black leather shoes (HK$9,000; all far right). Sadly, the bag isn't available in Hong Kong yet. Jones is most famous for fusing street style with the grand names of fashion, a feat he has repeated in this ensemble of classic Americana bomber jacket (HK$118,000), check print shorts (HK$6,450), Galaxy belt (HK$6,000), Boy Scout derby shoes (HK$15,800) and paisley blue bandana (HK$2,750; all right). Prices for the suede polo and the rather fetching leather bag will be released soon. Louis Vuitton is in The Landmark, Central, tel: 8100 1182.
