1. Bright to remain silent Colourful socks mean a colourful personality, right? Er, well, hmm, not sure really. Oh God, why did we open that can of worms? Anyway, proceeding diplomatically, if you’re a fun-loving guy looking to express your individuality, then check out Thomas Pink’s wide range of colourful socks (pictured; HK$310 a pair). Equally, if you’re criminally boring, it can’t hurt to inject a bit of life into your wardrobe with some wacky soft footwear either. Thomas Pink is in Pacific Place, tel: 2155 9021.

2. A star is born Nicomede Talavera, aside from having a pretty awesome name, is a fashion superstar-in-waiting. The young British designer is a graduate of Central Saint Martins (where else?) and his early collections have been a smash. So it was really a no-brainer for luggage giant Eastpak to link up with Talavera to create limited runs of luxury staples, such as the backpack (right; HK$3,900) and bumbag (left; HK$2,200). Nicomede Talavera x Eastpak is available at Joyce, Pacific Place, Admiralty, tel: 2523 5944.

3. Hoots mon Not that we ever paddle in the shallow waters of national stereotype, ahem, but Scotland has a hit and miss record with its offerings to the world. Whisky, penicillin and Harris tweed all go in the “great” column, whereas haggis, the film Braveheart and the insufferable poetry of Robert Burns go in the “not so great” column. Before we get an avalanche of hate mail, for the Burns comment in particular, we can add Scottish designer Christopher Kane to the “great” column. London-based Kane is the next breakout designer and it’s only a matter of time before he opens a boutique in Hong Kong. We love his computer and digital print resort wear, especially the black and blue wave print shorts (right; HK$3,240) and the black and yellow geo print pair (left; HK$5,535). Christopher Kane is available at Harvey Nichols, The Landmark, Central, tel: 3695 3389.

4. Wop bop a blue bop One of the trends of summer, or rather the least painful and most wearable trend of the season, is the colour blue. From midnight blue to baby powder pastel and every variation in between, the colour kept popping up on the runways of all the big brands. Even International Klein Blue made the odd appearance although I’m sure the significance will be lost to most people. Hermès was bluer than most and made the colour work for summer with looser fits and great mixing and matching of shades. We start with the raffish look that features a two-tone deep blue suit jacket (HK$16,100), in cotton poplin and with a tie print. The trousers (HK$6,800) are a midnight blue and have the same print as the jacket but the material is a cotton and linen gabardine. Underneath we have a pale blue cardigan in extrafine cashmere (HK$13,400), a tank top in cashmere (HK$5,600) and, to finish the look, navy blue moccasins (HK$5,700; all right). If you’re a baller (that’s American slang for a money-no-object playboy living it large), then we recommend this fetching look of one-pleat cotton and linen gabardine trousers (HK$5,800), mesh cotton tank top (HK$6,600), greyish blue silk and cotton scarf (HK$5,300), calfskin sandals (HK$5,200) and the piece de resistance – the short pea coat in nubuck lambskin that will set you back several million pennies (HK$143,900; all left). Hermès is in Pacific Place, tel: 2522 6229.
