A radio show recently asked listeners to come up with ideas for Hong Kong musicals. A few thoughts immediately sprang to mind …

Billy Spelliot could be a show about a boy who thought he was the only person left in Hong Kong who cared about putting letters in the right order. His mission? To erase the green grocer's apostrophe and American spelling from the streets of Central.

Rent would be an obvious, and slightly dark, choice - so many businesses have folded because of landlords' outrageous hikes.

A Tale of Two Kitties could be a crowd-pleaser, if it were about a woman with a huge collection of Hello Kitty merchandise. Imagine it: a romance doomed by her new lover's inability to open the door to her flat due to all the fluffy feline paraphernalia she's hoarding.

Petty Woman could be set in the Wan Chai wet market, and follow a haggling housewife who would rather cut off her own hand than pay full price for a catty of pork.

And how about We Will Wok You? The story of a rising band of dai pai dong chefs who want to express their creativity with guitars and drums, along with woks, steamers and choppers?
