A typical Hong Kong wedding will set you back about HK$280,000, according to statistics floating around the internet. That's a hefty wad to throw down on something that could end in tears before the firstborn is in long trousers. Flamboyant nuptials have long been big business, with the venue, reception, flowers, rings, cake and photographer all to think about. But, to the bride, those things matter little if the most important fairy-tale component is not perfect: no, not the groom, the dress!
In fact, the frock is so damn vital we apparently need a reality show devoted to the quest of finding the perfect gown.
Set in Manhattan's Kleinfeld Bridal, Say Yes to the Dress (TLC, Friday at 10.30pm) is hosted by the high-end boutique's fashion director, Randy Fenoli, who helps a cross section of brides-to-be search for their ideal frock.
Whether they are getting hitched in a church, on a beach or marrying their brother on Planet Mormon, it's part fashion show, part therapy session as the women, all accompanied by an entourage of bickering family and friends, try on a seemingly endless supply of outfits. A bridal consultant then adds a few random frills here and there and - ta-dah! - we have a winner! (Cue much high-pitched squealing and clapping of hands.)
And that's it. No, really, that is it.
Say Yes to the Dress is already in its 11th season in the United States, but unless you're nuttier than a sackful of squirrels I would just say no to the show.
