Who started it? Sarah Lai’s journey into fashion began with the silks and satins of her grandmother’s wardrobe. Born into a prominent Shanghainese family, she admired the detail and craftsmanship in these tailored pieces, and developed a passion for couture. After a stint in finance, Lai noticed a lack of practical and elegant fashion in the corporate world and decided to make her hobby her work. She studied at Central Saint Martins, in London, Britain, where she launched her debut collection, based on a philosophy rooted in feminine functionality. Why we love it: contrasting textures and feminine lines are the collection’s backbone. Tweed skirts, lace trims and high necklines also feature, making Sarah Lai a great local label for chic workwear. While traditional in style, Lai is a fan of modern materials, and we love the vampier leather capes and classic pencil skirts. What we’d pick: for a shot of homegrown, Chanel-inspired fashion, there’s the tweed knit red and black lace Vivian jacket (left; HK$4,800). Or try the Lindy leather pencil skirt (above right; HK$3,390), for something a little edgier. Where you can get it? Sarah Lai is available at D-mop, 11 On Lan Street, Central, tel: 2840 0822.
