Hot spots: Hilton Zhongshan Downtown

According to TripAdvisor, the best of 292 hotels in Zhongshan, which is north of Macau. At 60 storeys (five of which are rented to third parties), it's one of the tallest buildings in the historically and architecturally interesting prefecture-level city. Seen as the gateway to Guangdong province for those travelling by ferry from Hong Kong, Zhongshan was home to the founder of modern China, Sun Yat-sen.

Five-star luxury for little more than HK$1,000 a night - so you can feel like you're splurging without actually spending big. The two-year-old property is only 90 minutes from Tsim Sha Tsui by comfortable, reliable ferry. You get some idea of what you're in for when you see the uniformed driver and a long, sleek car waiting for you at the pier. But you do have to tell them you're coming; one thing the Hilton Downtown doesn't do is telepathy.

If you are jetlagged or one of those types who tends to exercise at 3am, you might like to know that the hotel gym is open 24 hours a day. There is also a top-of-the-line spa that can soothe (or, if you want, pummel) your stresses away and a 25-metre heated swimming pool. You don't even have to swim; a whirlpool can move your body around for you.

Each beautifully designed bathroom comes with a romantic, free-standing bathtub and (ladies, take note) toiletries by the wonderful Peter Thomas Roth.

You will be spoilt for choice. The Horizon lounge bar on the 59th floor (which, given the 60th is reserved for special events, is essentially as high as you can go) serves contemporary food in front of breathtaking city backdrops. One floor down, but with the same 360-degree view, is Il Ponte, where you'll find Italian food and Spanish tapas. On the 57th floor is a Japanese restaurant (below) with tatami-mat dining and kimono-clad waitresses. As if all that wasn't enough, on the third floor you can eat your way around the world in the all-day, buffet-style 360 cafe (above), which comes complete with tandoori oven and the most scrumptious European-style cakes.
